Sheinbaum has defended the administration, while also pledging "zero impunity" and highlighting her own record on security in Mexico City, where murders fell far more sharply. A recent study by a Mexican Senate think tank said Mexico suffers some 13,000 acts of extortion daily.

The Senate, controlled by Lopez Obrador's leftist National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) and its allies, approved the measure to do away with the trusts worth some 15 billion pesos ($820 million). Last week, the lower house of Congress voted to wind up the trusts, whose funds are due to be absorbed by the government. Mexico's Supreme Court said this month the elimination of the trusts will affect workers in the judiciary, pointing to their pensions and other social security benefits. "How does the judiciary benefit the Mexican people, or the majority of Mexicans? Critics of Lopez Obrador see the judiciary as a bulwark against his efforts to concentrate power.

MEXICO CITY, April 29 (Reuters) - The Mexican Senate approved in an express session on Saturday a package of laws including two constitutional reforms and a new mining law rebuked by the mining chamber and Canada. The mining law shortens concessions in the mining sector to 30 years from 50, tightens water extraction permits, and requires some mining profits to be returned to local communities, among other modifications. Lopez Obrador has not granted any new mining concessions since he took office in the world's top silver producing country in late 2018. The national mining chamber Camimex has warned such reforms could cost the country some $9 billion in investments and up to 420,000 jobs. Mining giant Grupo México (GMEXICOB.MX) said on Thursday that the government's reforms to the sector did not represent a risk to its portfolio.

MEXICO CITY — The Mexican government filed another U.S. gun lawsuit Monday, this time against five U.S. gun shops and distributors it claims are responsible for the flow of illegal weapons into Mexico. Mexico’s first lawsuit, which was recently dismissed, targeted U.S. gun manufacturers. The announcement comes several days after a U.S. federal judge dismissed Mexico’s first lawsuit against U.S. gun manufacturers; Mexico has said it will appeal that decision. The law shields gun manufacturers from damages “resulting from the criminal or unlawful misuse” of a firearm. The Mexican government estimates 70% of the weapons trafficked into Mexico come from the U.S., according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
